Spontaneous Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma in Aged Macaques

This report details two rare cases of spontaneous upper urinary tract urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) arising in the renal pelvis of aged non-human primates. A 22-year-old rhesus macaque and a 24-year-old cynomolgus macaque were incidentally found to have UCC during postmortem evaluations unrelated to urinary tract disease. Histologically, both tumors were characterized by nests and papillary projections of neoplastic polygonal urothelial cells within cystic spaces extending from the renal pelvis to medulla, supported by fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells exhibited moderate eosinophilic cytoplasm, distinct borders, minimal mitotic activity, and focal infiltration into adjacent parenchyma. These cases highlight the potential for spontaneous UCC in macaques and underscore their relevance as comparative models in the study of age-associated urothelial neoplasia.
